The latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) strongly echoes with the natural disasters now anchored in our daily life. More precise and reliable, this latest publication also conveys more alarming messages. At the current pace, we won\u2019t be able to reach 2015 Paris Agreement objective to limit by 2100 the rise in global temperature to 1.5\u00b0C, compared to pre-industrial levels. Neither below 2\u00b0C. In addition, the IPCC experts clearly correlate human action with climatic trends caused by greenhouse gas emissions. It is a red flag. And human responsibility is definitely widely acknowledged.<\/em><\/strong><\/p><p><strong><em>So, what can decision-makers take away from the IPCC\u2019s work? What is in their hands to help avoid the worst? Without waiting for further reports with official recommendations, we can affirm business leaders still have room for manoeuvre to lead the dramatic changes needed, here and now, to prevent a world in permanent crisis.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-a6f0946 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"a6f0946\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-cab8b8f\" data-id=\"cab8b8f\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3dfc985 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3dfc985\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The IPCC does not carry out its own research, but gathers studies that enjoy broad consensus among the international scientific community. It aims at forming the basis for scientific undisputable assessments, prior to political choices to be made by governments and private stakeholders. What the IPCC recently published is the first part of its sixth assessment report, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/assessment-report\/ar6\/\">Climate Change 2021: The Physical Science Basis<\/a>.<\/p><p>Written by 234 scientists from 66 countries, the report is based upon over 14,000 studies and focuses on the state and trends of the climate. Reports on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/report\/sixth-assessment-report-working-group-ii\/\">Impacts<\/a> (on natural and agricultural ecosystems and human societies) and on Risk Mitigation (with suggestions on ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions) should follow on February and March 2022 respectively, with a final <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/report\/sixth-assessment-report-cycle\/\">Synthesis for Policymakers<\/a> in September 2022.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-794fea8 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"794fea8\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-958934c\" data-id=\"958934c\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3182a14 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3182a14\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>According to the IPCC experts, observed warming is unprecedented in more than 2000 years. But we should keep in mind they do not have equal probabilities at all:<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-46e0842 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"46e0842\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-f35cc3e\" data-id=\"f35cc3e\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-89e508b\" data-id=\"89e508b\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5110efd elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5110efd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li>The 1<sup>st<\/sup> scenario (with <strong>warming limited to 1.5\u00b0C<\/strong>) would require a drastic reduction in global emissions starting today at a very high rate.<ul><li>It <strong>has a zero economic, social and political probability<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><ul><li>The 2<sup>nd<\/sup> scenario (with <strong>warming rising to 2\u00b0C<\/strong>) considers very severe policies implemented to restrict the use of fossil fuels for example.<ul><li>It has a low probability, but if these policies were to be implemented in the next 10 years at global level, this future <strong>should not be ruled out<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><ul><li>A 3<sup>rd<\/sup> scenario (with <strong>warming going up to 4\u00b0C<\/strong>) corresponds to the historical trajectory of greenhouse gas emissions since 1992. But what can they do to speed up the environmental transition?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0e88894 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0e88894\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In fact, plans for action are identified. Dramatic reduction of C02 emissions requires <strong>radical changes in energy consumption habits<\/strong>: ramping up renewables, transitioning to electric vehicles, phasing out coal power, increasing the use of low-carbon fuels or industry electrification are some of the major paths already taken by both the public and the private sectors to make energy transformation happen. But not fast, not widely enough. As reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/onewri.sharepoint.com\/:p:\/s\/climatewatch\/EbEyV2QCNDBFsZpJ1inMcRYBrBLOu4MsEulJb_P_Vn76Zw?rtime=uM0VFadz2Ug\">Climate Watch<\/a> platform, we need to speed up to achieve net-zero emissions across all sectors.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3a6b0d7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"3a6b0d7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1017\" height=\"585\" src=\"https:\/\/webprod.dev\/horbe-2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Source-Climate-Watch-State-of-Climate-Action-WRI.png\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-1154\" alt=\"Climate Action\" srcset=\"https:\/\/webprod.dev\/horbe-2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Source-Climate-Watch-State-of-Climate-Action-WRI.png 1017w, https:\/\/webprod.dev\/horbe-2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Source-Climate-Watch-State-of-Climate-Action-WRI-300x173.png 300w, https:\/\/webprod.dev\/horbe-2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Source-Climate-Watch-State-of-Climate-Action-WRI-768x442.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1017px) 100vw, 1017px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4a07bac elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4a07bac\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Using C02-capture technologies, as well as fostering reforestation, can beneficially contribute<\/strong> to decreasing carbon footprint. <strong>But they cannot substitute the severe reduction in fossil fuel usage that is dramatically needed.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-22e3704 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"22e3704\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Environmental and energy transitions require from companies a clear roadmap involving multiple stakeholders driving their efforts in the same direction, with the same ambition.<\/p><p>For this reason <strong>we strongly encourage business leaders to engage their company in a climate strategy<\/strong> <strong>in line with the global goal of reaching carbon-neutrality by 2050<\/strong>. The UE, the United-Kingdom, Japan, South Korea, and other 110 countries, are committed to it. All together they represent over 65% of harmful greenhouse gasses and more than 70% of the world economy. Private sector stakeholders need to align, to both contribute to common good and boost their business resilience.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-ba1d76a elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"ba1d76a\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-2ffdfcc\" data-id=\"2ffdfcc\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9e9d15b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9e9d15b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Developing a climate strategy requires:<\/p><ol><li><strong>an ambition<\/strong> in line with the 2050 net-zero goal, within planet boundaries<\/li><li><strong>quantitative, science-based objectives<\/strong> of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions <br \/>for scopes 1, 2 and 3<\/li><li><strong>short and medium-term milestones<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>measurement of GHG<\/strong>, based on standards internationally recognized <br \/>(eg. GHG Protocol, ISO 14604)<\/li><li><strong>detailed action plan and resources<\/strong> (budget, investments) for transitioning<\/li><\/ol>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-849e887 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"849e887\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-80cc0f2\" data-id=\"80cc0f2\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-502fd3f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"502fd3f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>It is the executive committee\u2019s responsibility to both validate, promote and commit to the corporate climate strategy. While targeting carbon neutrality, its climate action should be <strong>consistent with the company\u2019s <em>raison d\u2019\u00eatre<\/em><\/strong> and <strong>strengthen its business model resilience.<\/strong><\/p><p>To be relevant and successful, the company will design and implement its climate strategy <strong>through a multi-stakeholder approach<\/strong> that involves employees and internal players, suppliers and partners of the whole value chain as well. As the impact on third parties has to be measured, it implies having the environment and civil society represented in this approach too. Developing a climate strategy is a valuable opportunity for a fostered and structured dialogue between a company and all the stakeholders of its ecosystem.<\/p><p>We understand that each company has its own specificities due its sector, culture, vision, etc. But when drafting their climate plan, it is important they refer to international standards to allow relevant benchmarks. Companies should use <strong>scientific standards <\/strong>like <a href=\"https:\/\/sciencebasedtargets.org\/\">SBTi<\/a> to build their quantitative objectives and use <strong>international frameworks <\/strong>(eg. TCFD, GRI, SASB, IRC, CDSB standards, etc.) for their impact assessment.<\/p><p>Last but not least, once designed, implemented and assessed, the climate strategy should be made public for the sake of transparency. Its release is not part of the non-financial performance disclosure obligations, at least not yet. But companies should anticipate future legal pressure as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sayonclimate.org\/\">civil organizations<\/a> increasingly advocate \u201cSay on climate\u201d schemes to speed up transformation. Modelled on \u201cSay on pay\u201d regulation, a <strong>\u201cSay on climate\u201d <\/strong>stipulation would link Top leadership\u2019s remuneration to the company\u2019s climate strategy. The movement is already underway: following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.climateaction100.org\/\">Climate Action 100+<\/a> investor-led initiative, volunteer companies recently submitted their climate action roadmap to shareholders\u2019 &#8211; consultative \u2013 vote at their annual general meetings.<\/p><p>It is not companies\u2019 sole responsibility to tackle global warming. Isolated actions from private stakeholders will not be sufficient to preserve the planet. But companies are instrumental in mobilizing their partners and other private stakeholders in common ambitions, in cooperation with the public sector, civil society and citizens.
